- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s initial reviews are not as impressive as anticipated.
- Compared to past releases, this is now one of the worst-rated entries of the series.
- The game has been criticized for technical problems, linear gameplay, and more.
The Metroid franchise, like most of Nintendo’s releases, is known for its high-quality offerings. In fact, this series spawned an entire genre of games known as Metroidvanias.
Following the excellent Metroid Prime Remastered from 2023, the series has returned with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond this year. Amid a troubled development and plenty of doubts, however, it seems that the series’ latest entry has failed to meet expectations.
Why it matters: Many have been looking forward to Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for nearly a decade at this point, making this result quite disappointing.

Over on Metacritic, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has landed on a score of just 81/100 after 64 critic reviews. This score was initially lower than 80/100, but later reviews were more positive and helped the title regain lost ground. A few of the review scores are mentioned below:
- LevelUp 95/100
- Atomix 85/100
- IGN 80/100
- GamesRadar+ 70/100
- Eurogamer 60/100
While an average of 81/100 is by no means bad, it pales in comparison to the usual offerings of the Metroid franchise.
In fact, looking at past mainline Metroid Prime titles, the latest release is a major step back in terms of critical reception since Metroid Prime 1,2, and 3 were rated 97, 92, and 90/100, respectively.
Going over the reviews, it seems Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is being criticized for its linearity, technical hiccups, and companion characters. Of course, these criticisms aren’t surprising for anybody familiar with the game’s development cycle.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was first announced nearly 10 years ago, and the game was also developed by a very different team than its predecessor. It seems these elements have impacted the overall quality of Metroid Prime’s latest offering.

Still, many are hoping to judge the title after playing it for themselves. It will be interesting, then, to see how the title performs at release and whether the critical and player reception shows a major divide.
