Metroid Prime 2 Remake Could Be Next As Nintendo Revisits Classic Titles

Kensuke Tanabe Wants To Get The Multiplayer Mode Right.

Story Highlight
  • A remake of Metroid Prime 2 has been teased by Kensuke Tanabe, the IP’s producer.
  • Tanabe reflected on the messy nature of the game’s multiplayer when it launched in 2002.
  • The producer stated he wanted a remake to introduce a new generation of fans to the multiplayer mode.

After years of gameplay reveals and teases, Nintendo is set to launch Metroid Prime 4 this December. The game was initially announced in 2017, giving it an 8-year development cycle, as the Japanese publisher restarted development in 2019.

Nintendo has renewed interest in the franchise this decade, releasing a game in 2021 and remastering Metroid Prime 2 years ago. And, if rumors are true, the second game in the series could also get the remake treatment soon.

Why it matters: Metroid Prime is one of the most influential action titles in gaming history and has a strong core fanbase. Hence, seeing Nintendo pay attention to it is a win for the players.

In Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective, an art book covering the original trilogy, producer Kensuke Tanabe subtly hints that a remake of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes could be in the works.

If it (Metroid Prime 2) is remade, I would be delighted for more people to have the chance to experience it.

Metroid Prime 4 Beyond is the only confirmed game in the series for the Switch 2.

Tanabe discusses the game’s multiplayer mode, noting that only a few players were able to experience it due to the local play feature. And, the producer wishes that more fans could play a better version of the multiplayer in a Metroid Prime 2 remake.

There have been rumors regarding a remaster/remake of the 2004 title, but nothing concrete has come out from Nintendo’s side. Kensuke Tanabe has been the IP’s producer for 23 years, so this tease carries more weight than any other leak.

When Metroid Prime 2 launched in 2004, it became an instant classic, but its multiplayer mode drew criticism, a point Tanabe also reflects on in the art book. Hence, the longtime producer may want to perfect one flaw in the classic action game.
