Max Payne Was Released On This Day 22 Years Ago

Iconic Franchise Is Over Two Decades Old!

The Max Payne franchise needs no introduction. Remedy Entertainment’s third-person shooter series has received critical acclaim for over a decade, and it was among the first games to popularize the use of bullet time in the shooter genre.

While multiple titles have been released in the franchise, the first game was released in 2001 and is now 22 years old.

Why it matters: While the series has not received a new entry in many years, Remedy Entertainment is already working on remakes for the first two games. Therefore, the industry has not seen the last of Max Payne.

Max Payne Remake Rockstar Remedy

The first entry follows the protagonist Max Payne as he attempts to solve his family’s murder mystery. However, this simple mystery leads to various plot points, growing into a much larger conspiracy, including different organizations.

While the game’s narrative is no slouch, Max Payne made a name for itself due to its excellent gameplay in the early 2000s. It delivered thrilling third-person shooter gameplay, which was complimented by the bullet time mechanic.

This led to excellent reviews for the title, with many even claiming that it was the most important action game for PC. Following its success, Max Payne was ported to the Xbox and PS2.

For users looking to revisit or play the iconic action game, it can easily be found on modern consoles.

As stated earlier, Remedy Entertainment is also working on a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2, so new users might be better off waiting for the enhanced release to experience the games for the first time.

Recently, the developer confirmed both remakes had reached the proof-of-concept phase. While the studio is making steady progress, the remakes will take at least another year to be ready.
