Hollow Knight: Silksong Negative Steam Reviews Keep Growing!

Story Highlight
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong’s negative reviews have now already doubled the original game’s number on Steam.
  • The negative reviews for the sequel have grown due to its high difficulty and flawed Chinese localization.
  • That said, the game still sits at 77.6% positive reviews, with the studio already addressing criticisms.

After years of silence, Hollow Knight: Silksong launched with a bang a week ago. The title has sold like hotcakes and quenched the thirst for a sequel to the original beloved game. However, the release has not been without a slew of controversies between the celebrations.

The sequel has been negatively reviewed by a lot of gamers due to its brutal difficulty. It was also given scathing reviews by certain Chinese players because of flawed localization. All of this has caused Silksong to gain double the negative Steam reviews of the original.

Why it matters: The 22.4% negative Steam reviews for Hollow Knight: Silksong show that while the sequel is quite enjoyable, it still did not launch without a fair share of issues. Meanwhile, the original only has 3% negative Steam reviews.

As seen on SteamDB, Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently sitting at a 76.79% positive review score. In other words, there are 32,819 (22.4%) negative reviews compared to 113,414 positive reviews (77.6%) on Steam at the moment.

Comparatively, the original Hollow Knight has a staggering 96.03% positive reviews after all these years, with only 13,758 (3%) being negative, in contrast to 439,388 positive reviews (97%).

The sequel certainly lives up to—if not surpasses—the expectations of the original Metroidvania platformer. However, the high difficulty of some early bosses has made it hard for some gamers to enjoy the sequel.

Hollow Knight: Silksong has otherwise shaped up to be an amazing sequel.

The good news is that the developers are already working on nerfing some criticized high-difficulty bosses. Additionally, the patches are also polishing other parts of the game.

On a side note, nearly half the Hollow Knight: Silksong player base are Souls-like fans, and many players believe the game offers too much for its low $20 price.

Do you think that most of these negative Hollow Knight: Silksong reviews on Steam are justified? Were the game’s difficulty and Chinese localization really that faulty? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
