- Ghost of Yotei has garnered praise from various Japanese developers.
- The Devil May Cry director has praised the game’s combat and action gameplay.
- Team Ninja’s Fumihiko Yasuda has also appreciated the game and its predecessor.
Ghost of Yotei has finally arrived five years after its predecessor inspired a wave of samurai-focused titles set in Japan. Much like its predecessor, the game presents a heartfelt narrative based on historic Japan, with a focus on respecting the Japanese culture and heritage.
It makes sense, then, that Japanese developers have already become fond of the title. In fact, many veteran developers are already praising Sucker Punch Productions’ work.
Why it matters: Sucker Punch Productions always takes great care to live up to the expectations of Japanese audiences. As a Western studio, the team does its best to stay true to the series’ setting and Japanese inspirations.

As shared on Twitter, Ghost of Yotei has already impressed veteran developers Fumihiko Yasuda and Hideaki Itsuno. The former has directed titles like Nioh and Rise of the Ronin, while the latter is most famous for leading the Devil May Cry IP at Capcom.
Speaking at the Archipel Caravan Game event, Fumihiko Yasuda expressed interest in working on a game set in Hokkaido. He confirmed that he is currently playing Ghost of Yotei and enjoys the franchise greatly. The developer even used the series as inspiration when working on Rise of the Ronin.
While Hideaki Itsuno has yet to play the game, he noted that the trailers looked quite impressive, and the developer praised the combat in particular. Given his history with action games like Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma, Hideaki Itsuno’s appreciation for the gameplay should not be taken lightly.
Perhaps this is why the critic reviews have also been so positive so far, with the game reportedly reaching a major milestone in one day.

Of course, this is not the first time Sucker Punch Productions has received praise from Japanese developers. Ghost of Tsushima was also praised by the likes of Shinji Mikami, so it seems the sequel appears to be moving this legacy forward.
