It was expected that Nvidia would be shifting the production of its GeForce RTX 40-series to new variants. The graphics cards to get new variants were expected to be the GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.
By moving the new voltage comparator circuit onto the board, Nvidia introduced new variants, as using the GPU comparator was no longer required.
Moving the comparator to the board will also decrease the cost of the board, resulting in lower build costs for both Nvidia and its custom board partners. Though the price of the current generation cards from Nvidia remains the same, we don’t know why Nvidia decided to introduce new variants.
According to a user on Reddit,” cavitysearch123,” who has been waiting 03 months for the GeForce RTX 4090. The Nvidia Founders GeForce RTX 4090 the user received was indeed based on the new AD102-301 GPU. While the GeForce RTX 4090 was not even included in the earlier expected list, get a new variant from Nvidia.
The user also noticed that the Sub ID on his Nvidia Founders GeForce RTX 4090 was also changed. Furthermore, cavitysearch123 also tried flashing his card with the AD102-300 base model GeForce RTX 4090, which was impossible because of the Sub ID mismatch.
The user also reported that the power limit on his card was also lower and was running at 1.07V compared to 1.1V on the previous variant.
Currently, there is no information on whether decreasing the power limit has some drawbacks on the new variant of Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. While the new variant has only been seen on the Founders Edition for now, we might also see custom variants with the same AD102-301 GPU and lower max power limit.
What are your thoughts on the new GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition variant? Will Nvidia soon reduce the MSRP of its flagship graphics card?
