- Elden Ring Nightreign now offers two-player co-op, and it works incredibly well.
- This mode strikes the perfect balance between a solo experience and too many players.
- Two-player co-op feels just right, highlighting yet another success for FromSoftware.
FromSoftware has produced hit after hit over the last decade. Between games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Armored Core 6, the studio has produced solid releases, but none match up to the success of Elden Ring.
This is perhaps why the team decided to delve into online multiplayer with an Elden Ring spin-off earlier this year, marking the release of Elden Ring: Nightreign. Although this game has garnered mixed reactions, I personally found it quite fun as a co-op experience set in the Elden Ring universe.
However, I believe the game really came into own once FromSoftware added the dedicated two-player mode last month.
Why it matters: Elden Ring Nightreign signifies FromSoftware’s focus on trying new things, something I really appreciate.
The Two-Player Mode Works Well
It’s no secret that Elden Ring Nightreign was designed for three-player co-op. In practice, the game was always playable solo, but the original gameplay experience remained unmatched.
I find it even more impressive, then, that the two-player co-op mode works so well. FromSoftware’s signature difficulty is retained in this mode, while the chaos of three wildly different players battling a larger-than-life foe is eliminated from the experience.
In my opinion, this mode feels less overwhelming but just as fun. I also think this is exactly why now is the best time to buy an Elden Ring Nightreign key and jump into FromSoftware’s first attempt at online co-op.
Two Feels Right
It’s no secret that finding two friends who play the same games is not always easy. Between busy schedules and different interests, Elden Ring Nightreign’s co-op experience has always been held back by its three-player requirement.
In my opinion, the two-player mode completely solves this issue. Having just one other friend along for the ride also feels a lot more natural when attempting to navigate the challenging world of FromSoftware’s latest release.
New Kind of Experience
Perhaps the best part of this experience is that it is not easy. Elden Ring Nightreign ensures that even duos face formidable trials and bosses remain as threatening as ever. For instance, the Twilight Harbinger becomes less punishing as a duo, but the fight is certainly not for the faint of heart.
Beyond the gameplay, the two-player mode shines in terms of the narrative it builds. I fully expect duos to look back fondly on their Elden Ring Nightreign adventures a few years from now, something that simply wouldn’t be as effective when playing solo.
In the end, I think FromSoftware was smart to add this mode to Elden Ring Nightreign. For those who wish to play solo or in groups of three, the other options are still there, allowing the game to offer something for everyone.
I know for a fact that more players have jumped into Elden Ring due to this change, and digital marketplaces like Eneba make the purchase incredibly easy.
