- Egypt is the perfect next stop for Kratos in his mythological journey.
- The rich history, complex gods, and widespread lore of Egyptian mythos will give a fresh start to the franchise.
- Considering the game will be released on PlayStation 6, Egypt in the game will be a sight to behold.
In the last two generations, PlayStation has cemented itself as one of the industry’s leaders with exclusives being a big reason for this success. It has built a consumer base with millions of loyal fans and arguably the IP that has won over the most players is one of its oldest; God of War.
From its beginning in Greek mythology to its most recent outing in the nine realms, the series has been a critical and commercial success. God of War has sold over 66 million copies globally and with the game possibly moving to Egypt there is every chance that this triumph continues.
Why it matters: The reason God of War has been able to deliver AAA juggernauts for two decades now is its ability to deliver fresh narratives and new settings every few games and Egyptian mythology is perfect for a new foray.
Nuanced Gods And Rich Mythos
So far, Kratos has encountered and killed gods of two different mythologies, both of which have excessive mainstream attention. However, the same is not true for Egyptian mythology, as all the common man knows about it is through a failed Gerald Butler movie.
But, just like the Greek and Norse myths, it is filled with complex figures, extremely powerful Gods, and daddy issues. For starters, Horus is the Egyptian God of War and is also credited as the god of the sun and the sky.
Hence, the Egyptian deity is not just a rage monster like Ares and could be a formidable opponent for the first game. Horus’ descendants, on the other hand, are even more nuanced with his father Osiris making Egypt a prosperous society by teaching them agriculture.
Alongside his wife Isis, the goddess of motherhood and life, he ruled Egypt until he was eventually betrayed by his brother Set, The god of deserts and violence, who enclosed him in a tomb and cut him into 42 pieces.
Osiris was resurrected With the help of Anubis, the goddess of death, and became the God of the dead himself while Isis gave birth to the falcon god Horus, who fulfilled his prophecy of taking over the throne after decades of fighting Set.
When you add the angle of all-powerful grandfather Ra, who literally birthed humans in Egyptian mythos, to such family dynamics, you get a trilogy worth of gods to fight and drama to explore.
A Fresh Take On God Of War
The first God of War came out back in 2005 and the franchise has seen several mainline entries and spin-offs since then. The main reason this IP has held up even after two decades is its ability to freshen things up after every new title.
Following the first trilogy, which focused on an angry Kratos killing gods and avenging his wife, the PlayStation 4 reinvention gave us the same character but with a different demeanor and a brand-new world filled with interesting characters. And, when you consider the sales and reception of the last two games, this move fired on all cylinders.
Hence, setting the next God of War title in Egypt will let the franchise reinvent itself once again, giving us a fresh cast and a new mythology to explore. This prevents the series from going stale and also allows new creative ideas to come to the foray.
For instance, the Egyptian idea of Ra’s sun boat could be an interesting plot device, working in the same vein as Ragnarok but with a different narrative. Furthermore, Egyptian magic is also going to be interesting to behold after seeing the effect of Norse runes in recent titles.
When you add the aspect of mummies and the chance to revisit one of the most prosperous eras of history with giant pyramids, unique gods, and the most extraordinary beasts in all of the mythos, a trilogy almost feels too less.
A Next-Gen Egypt Will Be A Fan Favourite
Unsurprisingly, the Egyptian God of War will not be coming before the PlayStation 6 launches. But, that makes this project even more exciting as the idea of exploring an Egypt filled with powerful gods, built using next-gen hardware is something all fans will be into.
God of War: Ragnarok already set high standards in this aspect even though it came out on the PlayStation 4 alongside the PS5. Hence, we can only imagine how detailed and lively Egypt will be when Kratos arrives to fight its gods this upcoming generation.
