"I think Game Pass Is An Unsustainable Model"

Story Highlight
  • Fans and developers have praised Game Pass on many occasions, as it is pretty consumer-friendly.
  • However, due to the recent mass layoffs, the opinions of many seem to have changed.
  • Now, some high-profile developers have said that they prefer the PS Plus approach over Game Pass.

Recently, Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees. The layoffs were primarily targeted at the company’s gaming division, Xbox, mainly due to unrealistic expectations set by the CFO. Games like Perfect Dark were canceled, angering a massive amount of fandom.

As a result, many fans decided to cancel their Game Pass membership as a form of protest against Xbox. Now, even developers are saying that they prefer Sony’s approach to the PS Plus over Microsoft’s approach to the Game Pass.

Why it matters: Most of the time, Xbox Game Pass has been preferred over the PS Plus because it is more consumer-friendly. However, due to these massive layoffs, people are changing their opinions.

The former founder of Arkane Studios, Raphael Colantonio, also recently implied that Game Pass is the main culprit behind these layoffs. He said, “Why is no one talking about the elephant in the room? Cough, cough, Game Pass”.

On his tweet, many other developers shared their thoughts regarding the recent layoffs and what’s going on with Microsoft. Colantino further stated that the Game Pass is an unsustainable model that has been harming the industry for a decade and will continue to do so.

The publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3, Michael Douse, also shared his opinion, further degrading the Xbox’s subscription model. Douse further said that Game Pass did help the smaller teams, but he prefers Sony’s strategy with PS Plus.

Microsoft is Being Criticized By A Lot of People Around The Globe

The economics never made sense, but at the same time I do recognise that for smaller teams with new or riskier IPs it helped de-risk. Much prefer Sony’s ‘lifecycle management’ strategy.

PlayStation does not plan to release its first-party games on its subscription service on the same day. It doesn’t even release them after some time has passed. This way, the company ensures that fans buy games instead of just subscribing to PS Plus.
