Night City May Not Return In The Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

CDPR Believes Night City Is Just Another Setting!

Story Highlights
  • Night City has been one of the best open worlds in gaming history.
  • However, the senior writer suggests that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel does not need to be set in the same city.
  • Therefore, an entirely new location could be introduced in the next game.

This year has been amazing for Cyberpunk 2077 since the developers who worked hard on the title for many years finally redeemed themselves. Following the release of the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty, the focus has shifted to the game’s sequel.

The developers also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will not receive any major updates moving forward because of this shift. With initial work on the new game underway, many fans have been excited for the next iteration of Night City.

However, this location may not return in the sequel.

Why it matters: Night City is one of the liveliest open worlds in modern games, so some may find it surprising that CD Projekt RED is willing to move past this setting.

Cyberpunk 2077 Night City

During a recent interview with Gaming Bolt, Magda Zych, a senior writer at CD Projekt RED, was asked about the possibility of a new city for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. He replied:

“I think these kinds of stories can take place anywhere that uber-capitalism develops.”

He explained that Night City is just like any other city, and a sequel doesn’t necessarily have to be set in the same city again. Therefore, a different setting is not out of the question.

The developer’s comments suggest that either option is likely for now. Similarly, the studio is undecided about the game’s camera perspective, claiming that the next game doesn’t necessarily need to be another first-person shooter.

Therefore, it is clear that a lot of things are yet to be decided, including a potential return to Night City.

We agree with the developer’s perspective in this instance.

While Night City is incredible, a new location can be equally captivating if done right. It would also open up possibilities for a different feel, leading to a more distinct experience for the next game.

With new tech and the power of Unreal Engine 5 at its disposal, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has a lot of potential.

Such advancements could allow a new setting to shine despite the love for Night City. However, it would be equally interesting to see a new rendition of this fan-favorite setting in the next game.
