Moving To Future Projects After Last Major Update!

The Phantom Liberty expansion has started a new era for Cyberpunk 2077 after a well-received launch. Combined with the 2.0 update, this expansion has redeemed CD Projekt RED, bringing the studio back to glory.

Following the release of Phantom Liberty, Cyberpunk 2077 has recaptured thousands of players, amassing over 246K concurrent players in a busy year for the gaming industry while also securing the top spots on Steam’s best-sellers charts.

The game has gone through one of the biggest comebacks of all time, but CD Projekt RED has confirmed that it is time to move on, focusing on future projects like the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 has been transformed thanks to the new update. Phantom Liberty has expanded upon the game’s lore, leading to the complete package many had wanted at release.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

During a recent interview with PC Gamer, the game director of Cyberpunk 2077, Gabe Amatangelo, confirmed that these were the last two major updates for the game, and it will not receive any other expansion.

He further stated:

“We’ll do a little something more, but those are the last big ones.”

Though the game will continue to receive small updates for minor bugs and glitches, fans should not expect another overhaul.

This does not come as a major surprise since CD Projekt RED had already confirmed that Phantom Liberty would be the only expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. The studio explained that this decision was made after the team shifted to Unreal Engine 5.

CD Projekt RED is retiring its old tech with the RED engine. However, hopes are high for an even better release next time. While talking about the studio’s future projects, Gabe Amatangelo stated:

“Then it’s Cyberpunk 2 Or Orion, whatever we end up naming it.”

Thus, the journey of Cyberpunk 2077 has mostly come to an end. From CD Projekt RED’s perspective, not much is left to be done with the game.

While the studio had a grander vision for the game before release, the current version of the game is nothing short of impressive considering the state it launched in several years ago.

Cyberpunk 2077 has also gathered over 500K positive Steam reviews, marking a major success for CD Projekt RED. The studio announced the sequel, Project Orion, in December 2022. In addition to games like The Witcher 4, this will be a major focus for the studio moving forward.
