Commandos: Origins Announced; RTS IP Returns After 2006

First Game In 17 Years!

The Commandos franchise was one of the best real-time strategy games in the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite having a successful run with most of their titles, the franchise disappeared after the fifth entry, which is also regarded as the weakest.

However, the developers seem to have picked up interest in the franchise again, as both Commandos 2 and 3 received HD remasters in 2020 and 2022. The studio has also announced a new installment named Commandos: Origins.

Why it matters: The RTS genre has dedicated fans, and the Commandos IP was one of the strongest in the genre for a while. Therefore, new RTS players can experience a legendary franchise after its next release.

Fans of the IP have been patiently waiting since 2006, and Kalypso Studios has finally delivered an exciting announcement.

Not much has been revealed about the game, but, as the name suggests, Commandos: Origins will dig deep into how the characters in the franchise first started their journey and how they met.

Moreover, the game will feature two-player online co-op and more than ten missions, falling back to the IP’s original roots, which made the franchise successful in the first place.

Commandos: Origins will be available on almost every platform, including the Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5. Although a Nintendo Switch version has not yet been confirmed, we think it will likely come out later due to the console’s current popularity.

The announcement trailer also revealed good news for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, as the game will be available on the subscription service, possibly as a day-one release, though the latter remains to be confirmed.

While Commandos has traditionally focused on RTS gameplay, the fifth installment, Commandos: Strike Force, marked a massive shift, taking the series to the FPS genre. This led to a loss of appeal in the process.

However, a return to the RTS genre and the IP’s roots has led to excitement among fans of the series.

Commandos: Origins

Apart from Commandos, StarCraft from Blizzard is expected to return after the Activision Blizzard merger. The buyout is expected to be completed in October, leading to high hopes for StarCraft’s return to form.

Although Commandos: Origins does not have a release date, the game’s Steam page is up. It is expected to arrive in early 2024, but this remains to be confirmed.

Following the announcement, the RTS genre appears to be heading toward a promising future. In addition to an abundance of solid games already available, another legacy IP could add even more charm to the genre.
