David Mason Returns As Series Lead For First Time Since 2012!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox has officially released the first trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
  • This entry serves as the direct follow-up to Black Ops 2, showing characters like Menendez and David Mason in the trailer.
  • Fans can expect more gameplay details at Gamescom in August.

Xbox had more than a few exciting reveals at its latest showcase. The gaming giant shared a release date for Ninja Gaiden, revealed its first handheld, and confirmed DLC for Indiana Jones.

However, the excitement did not end there. Toward the end of the show, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer came on stage and officially unveiled the next big entry in the Call of Duty IP. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been officially announced, and it arrives later this year.

Why it matters: Although a new Call of Duty entry is expected each year, this year’s entry had fans more excited than usual because rumors suggested a return to the Black Ops 2 era in over a decade.

Black Ops 7 shows the first futuristic take on the series in nearly a decade, marking the first title to take the series in a somewhat sci-fi direction since 2018’s Black Ops 4.

Although the game is expected to be somewhat grounded in its portrayal of the future, the setting shows Cyberpunk-like elements, retaining the classic futuristic theme of Black Ops 2.

The trailer also shows series lead David Mason returning for the first time in over a decade. David Mason, the son of Black Ops protagonist Alex Mason, played a critical role in the Black Ops 2 campaign alongside another popular character who has been featured in the teaser trailer.

Black Ops 2’s iconic villain Raul Menendez makes a surprise cameo in the trailer, creating further excitement for Black Ops 7. Although Xbox did go into too many details regarding the title, fans can expect a plethora of new details at Opening Night Live in August.

The Black Ops 2 Story Continues Later This Year

Additionally, Activision has confirmed a co-op campaign for Black Ops 7, a feature last seen in 2015’s Black Ops 3. Fans can also expect the traditional multiplayer and zombie experience from the game later this year.
