Borderlands 4’s high anticipation has finally been answered, as the game has been officially confirmed to be in development

Why it matters: Following several hints about Borderlands 4’s development, its official revelation brings a sense of excitement and fulfillment to its dedicated fanbase.

Borderlands 3 Is Nearly Five Years Old Already

The announcement came alongside Take Two’s acquisition of Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands, from Embracer for a whopping $460 million. With Embracer Group going through a restructuring, Gearbox seems to have escaped unscathed.

According to the press release, Gearbox currently has six key interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development, which include five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises.

Take-Two is looking confident about the future of the Gearbox franchises that they would acquire. The acquisition is planned to be closed by the first quarter of its 2025 Fiscal Year, which ends on June 30, 2024.

Borderlands
Borderlands 4 Will Be Developed Without Embracer Group’s Involvement

It seems that Embracer Games, yet again, had to let go of one of its developers. This has been a recurring theme recently as their acquisition spree is finally taking a turn on them.

This is worrying for Embracer Games as the publisher faces the aftershocks of consolidation. Currently, Embracer Games is having a tough time with studio closures, acquisitions, and layoffs.

Nonetheless, we hold optimism for the future of Borderlands under Take-Two’s ownership, given its reputation for delivering quality games. It will be intriguing to see how these franchises evolve under Take-Two’s supervision.
