Borderlands 4 Already Selling For 20% Off On Steam, Suggesting Sales Failed To Meet Internal Expectations

Borderlands 4 Got A Huge Price Cut A Few Weeks After Launch!

Story Highlight
  • Borderlands 4 is now on sale for 20% off on Steam, only a month after launch.
  • Its price has been slashed by $14 for a limited time, suggesting its full price may have impacted initial sales.
  • It sold 2.5 million copies after its first week, which was reportedly only half of Borderlands 3’s initial sales.

Borderlands 4 is a fun FPS if we push a plethora of technical issues aside, as it launched in an unoptimized state on PC and consoles. The game hit as low as 1 FPS in some areas on the PS5, despite the Gearbox CEO assuring that it would run ‘buttery smooth’ on consoles.

The game sold over 2.5 million copies in its first ten days, but the decent head start was only half of Borderlands 3’s initial figure. Now, it is already selling for 20% off on Steam, suggesting that the initial sales failed to reach the internal target.

Why it matters: Borderlands 4 selling for 20% off on Steam is good news for gamers, but the discount suggests the game did not have as strong an impact on the industry as Randy Pitchford expected.

Borderlands 4 is selling for 20% off on Steam for a limited time.

As seen on the Steam page, Borderlands 4 is available for only $55.99, a $14 discount from its original price of $69.99. So, gamers who were hesitant to purchase the title due to its price can now give it a shot. However, the offer is only valid until October 20th.

The Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions are also enjoying the 20% off sale. Regardless, this deal is being mocked online because the Gearbox boss, Randy Pitchford, had claimed Borderlands 4 would not go on sale for a long time.

There was a lot of controversy about Borderlands 4’s pricing even before launch, as rumors had suggested an $80 price tag instead of $70. Randy Pitchford had previously claimed that gamers would still find a way to buy the game even if it cost $350.

Borderlands 4 gameplay release date
The game launched with plenty of technical issues.

Therefore, Borderlands 4’s price being reduced to $55 for the next week even suggests that its $70 price hurt its sales. In other words, it may have sold as much as Borderlands 3, if not more, if it had been priced more fairly.

Do you think Borderlands 4 already selling for 20% off on Steam for a limited time suggests it sold less than internal expectations, or is that claim too unprecedented? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
