Blizzard Is Said To Be Developing A StarCraft Shooter RPG!

Story Highlight
  • A new job listing suggests that Blizzard’s unannounced open-world title is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.
  • This upcoming game is expected to be the rumored AAA StarCraft open-world RPG that past job listings have also hinted at.
  • It might be released on multiple platforms and have online multiplayer gameplay with all the usual RPG elements.

Earlier this year, Blizzard published some new job ads suggesting an open-world AAA multiplayer game was in the works. This tidbit perfectly aligned with the rumors by the gaming industry’s Jason Schreier that the studio was working on a StarCraft shooter.

Now, we have stumbled upon new job listings, including one for a Senior Technical Designer from Blizzard, that confirm that the first-person shooter with RPG elements is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. In other words, we can expect an open world with eye-catching visuals for the rumored StarCraft RPG.

Why it matters: Blizzard’s upcoming open-world entry will likely be one of the best-looking RPGs to launch in the future because it is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.

Blizzard’s job listing for Senior Technical Designer confirms the game is using UE5.

The listing highlights that the developers will have to use Unreal Engine 5 Blueprint to design challenging gameplay elements, which includes ‘mission-related content’ and implementing an ‘open world.’

Another new listing for ‘Lead Software Engineer’ confirms that Blizzard is prepping an AAA online multiplayer game with all the expected RPG elements. This ad also mentions Unreal Engine as a required experience for the developer.

Moreover, Blizzard wants the developer to have shipped games across both PC and consoles, suggesting a multiplatform release.

These job listings further suggest Blizzard is developing a StarCraft RPG.

For those not in the know, Blizzard’s cancelled survival entry also initially began development using Unreal Engine 5, but the developers switched to a proprietary engine later on. The game was ultimately cancelled due to technical difficulties, so Blizzard’s decision to revert to Unreal Engine 5 seems like a wise one.

Do you think Blizzard’s heavily rumored StarCraft RPG will be an Unreal Engine 5-based project, or will the studio switch over to its proprietary engine? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
