Blizzard Believes AI Can Do More Good Than Harm!

Story Highlight
  • Blizzard has recently used AI for World of Warcraft’s marketing material.
  • A visual artist from the team states that AI can actually boost creativity if used right.
  • He says that the technology can handle mundane tasks and allow developers to focus on what matters most.

The gaming industry has increasingly shifted its focus toward AI and its implementation during the production of large-scale projects. Big studios like Take-Two, EA, and more are already on board, and more teams are actively exploring opportunities to use AI.

Among these teams, Blizzard seems to have already used AI for World of Warcraft. In fact, the team has even defended this decision in a recent interview.

Why it matters: AI usage has become a major threat to game development, and many developers lost their jobs recently due to major publishers relying on the technology.

World of Warcraft
WoW Could Use AI In The Future

Speaking to Eurogamer, Gabriel Gonzalez from World of Warcraft’s visual arts team discussed the use of AI at Blizzard. He pointed to the tools being used for mundane tasks and raised an interesting benefit that comes from the use of artificial intelligence.

As per Gabriel Gonzalez, the technology should indirectly help Blizzard developers exercise more creativity. He believes that the team will have more time for the creative parts of game development thanks to artificial intelligence handling the repetitive tasks.

How do we find ways to do away with the more menial parts of the work and free up more time for people to be creative? Things like AI help a lot.

As an example of Blizzard’s recent AI use, the studio seems to have relied on the tools for some of World of Warcraft’s marketing. Over on Reddit, users noted an interesting overuse of certain terms that suggest artificial intelligence was used to write the descriptions.

Of course, Blizzard does not currently use AI for tasks like gameplay or character creation at the moment. The studio still believes these tasks are done best with human input, but there is no telling how things will evolve as artificial intelligence matures further.
