Bethesda Veteran Blasts Modern AAA Design; Wants Smaller Scale For Elder Scrolls 6 Than Starfield

Dev Thinks Bethesda Games Are Already Big Enough!

Story Highlight
  • Former Bethesda developer and Skyrim veteran Nate Purkeypile states that Bethesda should not aim to outdo Starfield with its next release.
  • He argues that The Elder Scrolls 6 should be more focused and constrained.
  • Todd Howard previously stated that this project would be his ultimate fantasy simulator.

Starfield launched in 2023 as Bethesda’s biggest game ever. Although the title launched to a positive reception, its open-world was less well-received than past titles like Skyrim and Fallout 3.

Veteran Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile argues that Starfield’s massive scope was actually a weakness.

Why it matters: Each new open-world AAA game aims for bigger and better worlds, but the former Skyrim developer argues this shouldn’t be necessary.

Starfield 2.0 Update
Starfield Failed To Make Its Open-World Compelling

Speaking to esportsinsider, Nate Purkeypile, the former Fallout 3, 4, and Skyrim World Artist, outlined his hopes for The Elder Scrolls 6’s setting. He believes the game should focus on a single region of Tamriel.

Nate Purkeypile argued that the RPG should not attempt to outdo Starfield in terms of scope. He brought up the point that Bethesda games have traditionally never felt too short or limited.

According to the former Bethesda developer, games like Skyrim are still being played to this day, so the amount of content has never been an issue for Bethesda’s RPGs.

I think there is something to be said for going a bit more constrained. Do you really need it to be bigger?

Elder Scrolls 6
There Is A Lot of Hype For The Elder Scrolls 6

Ultimately, the former Bethesda artist is in favor of a more densely packed version of The Elder Scrolls 6 as opposed to an RPG that is bigger than Starfield in a superficial manner.

Which direction Bethesda ends up going is anybody’s guess for now, but Todd Howard has described the project as his most ambitious in the past, so it will certainly be interesting to see how things eventually turn out.
