Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Ubisoft Doesn’t Want You To Use One-Shot Assassinations

Ubisoft Encourages Experimenting With New Mechanics Instead!

Story Highlight
  • One-shot assassinations were removed from past Assassin’s Creed RPGs.
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers a toggle to bring this element back.
  • Ubisoft states that this is an optional mechanic and players should experiment with the various other systems present in the game instead.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is fulfilling the long-anticipated dream of a Ubisoft open-world set in Japan. Following positive impressions and media previews, fans have been excited to learn more about the many systems present in the game.

Ubisoft has introduced various changes to combat and parkour gameplay. The studio has also brought back fan-favorite mechanics like one-shot assassinations, although it recommends avoiding this playstyle.

Why it matters: One-shot assassinations were a staple of the franchise until Assassin’s Creed Origins rolled around and tied assassinations to the progression system via levels.

During a recent interview with IGN, director Charles Benoit discussed Ubisoft’s approach to assassinations and stealth in the latest sandbox.

The director confirmed that an option to instantly assassinate all enemies with a single button exists in the game, but he was also quick to point out that this is not the intended way to approach stealth encounters.

Instead, Ubisoft wants players to experiment with the many intricate mechanics and perks of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. For instance, certain perks boost air assassinations, while others improve assassination abilities at night.

Such combinations are designed to encourage players to use the environment based on their perks and abilities for more varied and thoughtful combat. Of course, those who prefer a more classic approach can always stick with one-shot assassinations.

Following the latest delay, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will arrive in just three more weeks. Ubisoft also appears to be quite confident in the title, boasting impressive pre-order numbers ahead of the release.
