- Ubisoft is currently working on Assassin’s Creed Invictus, a brand new, standalone multiplayer title.
- Cedrick Duquette was leading the game’s development as Production Manager, but he has now departed Ubisoft Quebec.
- This is one in a long list of high-profile developer departures from Ubisoft recently.
Ubisoft has been through a lot of turmoil recently, impacting many of its biggest IPs. Among those impacted, Assassin’s Creed seems to have seen the biggest changes, with the series recently losing its director.
Following the director’s departure, another key figure has confirmed plans to leave Ubisoft. This time, a major developer from the Assassin’s Creed Invictus team is set to leave the company.
Why it matters: Ubisoft recently created a new Tencent-led subsidiary to lead the Assassin’s Creed series. It seems this change has shaken up the fundamental structure of the French gaming giant’s teams.
Cedrick Dequette worked at Ubisoft Quebec for a whopping 9 years, lending his talents to games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Having begun his journey as a tester, the developer was leading production for Assassin’s Creed Invictus, serving as the Production Manager for the project until recently. Announcing his departure on LinkedIn, the developer also confirmed that he would share more on his future endeavors very soon.
This week marks the end of an important chapter: 9 years at Ubisoft Quebec.
-Cedrick Dequette
For context, this particular Assassin’s Creed project is a standalone multiplayer title. It is said to focus on a battle-royale-like experience, offering various modes, like deathmatch, free-for-all, and more.
Anyhow, the Production Manager’s exit could point to turmoil behind the scenes. Assassin’s Creed has never had too firm a grasp on multiplayer, flipping between PVP and co-op modes before dropping the online component altogether.
Because Assassin’s Creed Invictus marks a return to this format after many years, Ubisoft may be struggling to nail a direction for its upcoming release.
Of course, Cedrick Dequette isn’t the only developer to have left Ubisoft recently. We recently noted that Splinter Cell Remake appears to have lost its director, signalling a larger shift at the French company, with multiple high-profile developers departing in quick succession.
