AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D Listed With 144MB Cache; PRO 9000 Series Goes 16-Cores

AMD’s enterprise CPU lineup may soon get its first 3D V-Cache upgrade.

Story Highlight
  • A shipping manifest recently leaked the Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D, suggesting an official launch is coming soon.
  • This 16-core chip uses Zen 5 architecture and features 144MB of L3 cache, though it runs at a slightly lower clock speed than the standard 9950X3D.
  • As a “PRO” series chip, it includes specialized security tools, such as real-time memory encryption, and long-term software support for IT departments.

AMD’s upcoming desktop processor, Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D, has surfaced in a recent leak. Essentially, it appears to be slightly downclocked compared to Ryzen 9 9950X3D, while maintaining all of the benefits of an AMD Ryzen PRO processor. This marks the milestone of being the first AMD Ryzen PRO 9000 CPU to outperform a 12-core CPU configuration, as well as the first in the series to use 3D V-Cache technology to boost CPU memory for improved performance greatly

This processor appeared on a list associated with a shipping declaration, which is essential for customs, logistics, and traceability. This list includes not only the processor’s full name but also key specifications, such as the number of cores and TDP. Given that shipments are already being prepared, the processor could officially be announced shortly.

AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D

Regarding the processor’s basic specifications, the AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D is a 16-core, 32-thread CPU that uses the AMD Zen 5 architecture. The addition of 3D V-Cache technology to these cores boosts L3 cache to 144MB. This is paired with a TDP of 170 W.

The characteristics are similar to the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D. However, all Ryzen 9000 PRO processors launched to date are limited to a maximum frequency of 5.40 GHz. If this is the case with the Ryzen 9 Pro 9965X3D, it is around 300 MHz slower than the 9950X3D model.

This processor is expected to be released in the coming weeks and will undoubtedly use the same AMD AM5 socket. It will join the Ryzen 9 PRO 9945, Ryzen 7 PRO 9745, and Ryzen 5 PRO 9645, all of which have 12, 8, and 6 Zen 5 cores, respectively.

The AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D, designed for business security and IT administration, also features an exclusive gamer feature. This CPU leverages the AMD Pro Security platform, which provides data protection and system initialization features.

These features include: real-time RAM encryption (AMD Memory Guard), AMD Secure Processor (ASP) secure boot, and protection against control-flow attacks (AMD Shadow Stack).

Furthermore,  it includes an 18-month planned software stability guarantee, 36 months of planned availability, and a more rigorous platform validation process. In short, this isn’t a processor geared towards gamers or home users, as you’ll be paying for extras you won’t actually use.

This is why it is surprising to see an AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 9965X3D, designed for “professional” use, with physical attributes associated with improved gaming performance. Perhaps X3D technology offers benefits in specific workflows, particularly those that rely heavily on latency or memory. In this situation, a Ryzen PRO with X3D would be more appropriate for engineering, architecture, and development.
