For the past few years, a trend that has been continuously picking pace is that of the acquisition of gaming studios. We have seen big names like Microsoft acquiring huge studios to develop exclusive games. Activision, Blizzard, Arkane, and Bethesda, to name a few; similarly, we’ve heard various rumors that Sony’s Upcoming Acquisition Will Be Bigger Than Kojima Productions.

Embracer Group is a holding firm that has acquired several studios, bringing them all together under one roof. Since the beginning of the decade, Embracer Group, formerly known as THQ Nordic AB, has been rapidly growing, acquiring important influencers in the game business as well as other areas of entertainment. They don’t directly develop games, but their acquired studios are behind the biggest names in the gaming industry.

It was a very busy and profitable last year as they acquired some enormous game studios. The creators behind Borderlands games, Gearbox Entertainment, became part of the group. Similarly, they also acquired some smaller studios like Crazy Realms, Easy Trigger, and many others.

However, in 2022, they still haven’t shown any signs of stopping, with both Embracer Group and Tencent already acquiring 3 different studios each. With Beamdog and Invisible Walls already under their belt, Embracer just announced their acquisition of the Lost Boys Interactive as well which is a well-known AAA games development studio. It should be noted that Beamdog were the devs behind Baldur’s Gate remaster and have been working on Stars Wars: Knights of The Old Republic remaster, so they are a massive name in the industry.

Similarly, Tencent, which is another massive holding company is also acquiring studios at an unreal pace. Tencent was already famous for its acquisitions for a very long time. The biggest name among its studios was Krafton which gave us PUBG PC, which later was adapted as a PUBG Mobile Game by Lightspeed and Quantum. The greatest reason for their success is PUBG mobile and the reason they’ve been able to acquire 3 studios in 2022 already. Earlier in January, they bought Sumo Gaming Group for $1.25 Billion. The very next month they acquired 1C Entertainment, with more acquisitions likely to be announced shortly.

As the trend of acquisitions increases, we will see more exclusives and game studios working together on new games. This is exciting for gamers as these are massive studios working with each other now, and there is no doubt we will see many games from them in the upcoming years. Considering their reputation, gamers are in for a treat.
