Nearly ten to twelve years ago, the thought of holding a foldable smartphone in your hand was merely a futuristic thing. However, the rapid rise in technology gave birth to devices that were once considered concept designs. These devices include foldable smartphones launched a few years ago and gained popularity for their outstanding design. Nonetheless, they are not too mainstream since only a few are prominent, and this market is yet to be explored by other big companies.
Speaking of big companies, Apple plans to make a fantastic entry into the foldable device market. According to The Elec, Apple is working with LG to develop foldable OLED display panels and ultra-thin glass covers for future iPad and MacBook models. Previously, the collaboration between the companies was merely to bring OLED displays to future iPads and MacBook models. However, this time, it is far more significant than that because the plan to produce foldable devices doesn’t include iPhones, it includes iPads and MacBooks.
LG Display already has a solid track record in foldable OLED displays. It has previously supplied a 13.3-inch display panel for the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, the world’s first foldable laptop, so the idea behind the foldable 13 inch iPad Pro seems legitimate. Taking into account that manufacturing foldable tablets and notebooks is not mainstream yet, Apple may make a remarkable impact on the market.
Previously, it was reported by DSCC that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone. The Elec’s claim appears to follow the recent report from display analyst Ross Young suggests that Apple is working on a full-screen foldable notebook with a 20-inch display. This hints at the MacBook getting its very own foldable version.
It is reported that this Apple device forms a new product category. It is produced to serve a dual purpose, potentially allowing users to operate it as a monitor when it is unfolded and use it as a notebook with a full-size on-screen keyboard when it is folded. Young also added that the device would feature 4K or higher resolution.
According to Young’s description, the new device is described as a “foldable notebook,” but one cannot help but wonder if the device could also be a foldable iPad Pro. However, before this assumption stresses people out, it is clarified by today’s report from The Elec, which states that the display panel in development is suitable for both tablets and tablets notebooks.
The foldable iPad and MacBook would be phenomenal since Apple always decides to go above and beyond while being unpredictable sometimes. It could also come with Apple’s very-own twist, like removing the headphone jack from the iPhone. However, we have to wait and see for ourselves.
With a product like this, it is difficult for us to complain about the time it will take to reach our homes. According to Young, the launch timeframe for Apple’s foldable notebook is “likely later” than 2025, so it is safe to presume it will land on the market in 2026 or 2027.
