Rockstar Was Making A Medieval Knights Game With Mythological Elements At One Point, Says Dan Houser

Rockstar Was Trying Something Very Different!

Story Highlight
  • In a new interview, Dan Houser discussed a cancelled medieval IP from Rockstar.
  • The game would’ve featured mythological elements, but it never got too far into development.
  • Dan Houser also shed light on other cancelled projects in the same interview.

Rockstar is known best for its GTA and Red Dead Redemption franchises, but the studio had a lot more variety to its name a few years ago. Between racing games like Midnight Club and experimental sports titles like Table Tennis, the studio worked on different types of games more than a decade ago.

According to Dan Houser, the team even tried to branch out to a game set in a medieval period not too long ago, but the project did not work out.

Why it matters: Rockstar’s core IPs are the best in the business, but fans have wanted to see the studio branching out to different types of games.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser recently sat down with Lex Fridman and discussed the history of the studio.

Pointing to the many Rockstar projects that never saw the light of day, Dan Houser mentioned a knight-based concept with mythological elements.

We played around with a knights concept, trying to do a version of a mythological game. Still love that idea.

He confirmed that the project was only discussed briefly and never even got to the writing stage. However, Dan Houser still thinks the idea would work well if it was made into a full game.

Of course, this is not the first time a medieval game from Rockstar has been brought up. As early as 2019, there were rumors of a game like this being in development, but many believed there was little truth to those rumors.

With Dan Houser himself clearing the air, there’s little doubt that the project was indeed real. Interestingly, fans are still willing to see a project like this from Rockstar, with demand evident to this day.

Elsewhere, Dan Houser discussed Agent, a spy-themed project from the studio. This game was in the works during the PS3/Xbox 360 generation, but never moved too far into production.

Nonetheless, the team is currently focused entirely on GTA 6, hoping to make it the best game possible.
