  • Tim Cain criticizes organizations, saying they do a terrible job at game preservation.

Fallout creator Tim Cain recently started a YouTube channel. The legendary video game developer has been sharing stories from his career, as well as offering insights into the gaming industry at present.

Recently, Tim Cain revealed the original intent behind Fallout. In his latest video, however, he talked about video game preservation. The developer revealed that shortly after he departed from Interplay Studios, he was asked to destroy all the work he had done on the original Fallout game.

Why it matters: Destroying the work resulted in the loss of considerable work that the creator had done on the franchise, which is bad for video game history.

Tim shortly left the studio after the release of the first game. Still, in doing so, the studio demanded that all his work, including design codes, prototypes, and different versions, be destroyed.

He mentioned that Interplay intended to keep a copy of the archive with them, but eventually they lost it. The studio contacted Tim a few years later, stating that they had lost the archive, but the creator believed it was a ploy to trap him into admitting that he hadn’t destroyed the work.

The amount of stuff that’s been lost about Fallout and its early development saddens me.

While the retail code was eventually recovered, most of the original work, including artwork and additional content, is now lost.

Going All Digital Will Heavily Impact Video Game Preservation.

Tim listed three reasons why most gaming content is lost: no one bothered to save it, some individuals wanted to keep things private, and those who claimed to preserve it didn’t do the job correctly.

While video game preservation wasn’t a huge concern for developers back in the day, things have now changed. Major gaming giants, such as Xbox and PlayStation, have established dedicated teams to preserve gaming media that will remain accessible for generations to come.
