Story Highlight
  • AMD is developing a new series of APUs, including the flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395, featuring up to 40 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units and 16 Zen 5 cores.
  • The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is expected to be the fastest option in the lineup, with a TDP of 130W, support for four-channel LPDDR5X memory.
  • AMD Strix Halo APUs are targeting the mobile workstation market, currently led by Apple’s M-Series.

AMD reportedly develops three SKUs with up to 40 graphics compute units and 16 Zen 5 cores. The flagship SKU reportedly has the highest core count yet, despite past reports indicating otherwise.

Furthermore, the new lineup is expected to include at least two models with 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units. AMD’s Strix Halo APUs are expected to be a game changer for the mobile platform, featuring more CPU and GPU performance.

Why it matters: The development of AMD’s new APU lineup is significant because it represents a major push into the mobile workstation market, challenging established players like Apple.

A closer look at the SKUs reveals three new upcoming variants from AMD, with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 being the flagship option. The chip will feature 40 CU based on the RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture and 16 cores based on the Zen 5 architecture.

Previous leaks have also indicated that this chip will be the fastest in the stack, with a TDP of 130W and support for Four-channel LPDDR5X memory.

Under the Ryzen AI Max series, there are two more SKUs: the Ryzen AI Max 390, which has 12 CPU and 40 GPU cores, and the Ryzen AI Max 385, which is the entry-level model with 8 CPU and 32 GPU cores.

The AMD Strix Halo APU also features two CCD designs, each with eight cores. As for gaming devices, there is at least one variation that would work with a single-core chipset. The leaker additionally verifies that the Strix Halo is capable of handling up to 96GB of video memory.

AMD is aiming for the mobile workstation market, which is now dominated by Apple’s M-Series. However, the success of AMD’s new mobile lineup will eventually depend on performance and its competitive price.
