Unreal Engine 5 Is Still Too Demanding!

Story Highlight
  • Unreal Engine 5 is known to be very demanding on all platforms.
  • Marvel Rivals runs on the same engine and uses a dynamic 1440p resolution on the Xbox Series X and PS5.
  • The Xbox Series S can only run up to 972p, with more intense sections falling to 540p.

While Unreal Engine 5 has been out for a while, it continues to prove highly demanding. Due to the engine’s design, most games built on this technology require upscaling.

Not only on PCs, but Unreal Engine 5 titles are also extremely demanding to run on consoles. A new report highlights these challenges using Marvel Rivals as an example. This hero shooter drops as low as 540p on the Xbox Series S.

Why it matters: Many believe that the engine still needs much more time since it can be overly demanding for the current type of hardware.

Digital Foundry recently released a new video discussing the Marvel Rivals beta. The game was tested on both consoles and PCs, with the video focusing on technical features, visuals, and performance.

It appears that the hero shooter struggles a bit on the consoles. It runs at a dynamic 1440p resolution, dropping to as low as 810p on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Marvel Rivals beta uses Lumen and screen space reflections on the consoles.

This decision will likely help offer a smoother experience without sacrificing the resolution too much. The beta looks worse on the Xbox Series S as it sees major visual cutbacks, such as the removal of Lumen Global Illumination.

Moreover, screen-space reflections and character shadows are also removed. Elsewhere, the quality of textures and character models is lowered. In terms of resolution, the Xbox Series S runs at a dynamic 972p, which can go as low as 540p.

The video concludes that the Marvel Rival beta is stable on all platforms. However, it does not come without the typical stuttering issues of Unreal Engine 5. Fortunately, CDPR might help find a solution to this problem.

Despite its technical hiccups, Marvel Rivals has been a major success in beta. The game saw over 50K concurrent players on Steam alone, so the hero shooter is shaping up to be a major hit.
