Helldivers 2 Steam Player Count Down 85% As PSN Restriction Still In Place

Rapidly Losing Players Since PSN Controversy!

Story Highlight
  • Helldivers 2 had a healthy player base until PlayStation removed the game from over 100 countries.
  • Since then, the game has not been able to hit 100K players for over 10 days.
  • Daily concurrent player counts are also reaching new all-time lows with each passing day.

It has been nearly 20 days since Helldivers 2 was delisted from the majority of the world. The game did come back in some regions, but most are still left without access to the co-op shooter, which has been a major concern.

It’s no secret that the fandom turned the game upside down when the PSN restriction was imposed. Within just 48 hours, Helldivers 2 was review-bombed so harshly that Sony had to remove the restriction.

In the aftermath, Helldivers 2 has rapidly lost its players on Steam.

Why it matters: The live-service title had a fairly consistent player base until recently, hinting that recent controversies have been harmful.

The game has just hit its lowest 24-hour peak, which is far from the best sign. At the time of writing, it is standing at 21,807 players, with the 24-hour peak coming in at just 66,695 players.

While still impressive, this is a decline of over 85% overall. Further evidence of the sudden decline is the fact that the game averaged over 150K players last month before the restrictions.

Helldivers 2 has also been unable to reach 100K concurrent players on the platform in over 10 days, last reaching this player count on 12 May. A sharp decline is further visible on May 20, when Helldivers 2’s peak concurrent player count dropped by a whopping 20K players.

Sony Managed To Nearly Ruin Its Biggest PC Game Within Just 48 Hours

It seems fans waiting for Sony to make the game available in their region have now begun to move on. Helldivers 2 is also a few months old at this point, so losing some players is natural, but this sudden decline can be linked back to the recent controversy.

While Arrowhead aims to be the next FromSoftware, its ambitions may be impacted by these decisions. In fact, the team plans to roll out updates more infrequently moving forward, which could further lower the community’s interest.

With Sony taking the same approach for Ghost of Tsushima, we suspect the game was impacted in a similar manner. Still, Helldivers 2 continues to have a large community backing it.

Therefore, Sony should consider removing these restrictions as soon as possible to retain the remaining players.
