Dead Island 2 was finally released on the market in April 2023 after eight long years of development hurdles. Releasing on PC and nearly all modern consoles, it quickly became a success with 2 million sales by May.
Despite its wide availability, the game was not released on Steam due to a potential exclusivity contract with Epic Games Store. However, this may change soon. Embracer Group has recently hinted that the release will be made available to another platform next year.
Why it matters: Dead Island 2 was surprisingly well-received for a game that suffered from several years of troubled development, and a new release would bring the zombie-slaying adventure to a wider audience.
As reported by VGC, the CEO of Embracer Group highlighted Dead Island 2 as a strong release that lived up to the company’s expectations. During the company’s earnings call, the CEO looked ahead to the future of the zombie game and stated:
“Then looking a year ahead, we would have a release on another platform that will drive multiple sales.”
This statement confirms that Embracer Group plans to bring the title to additional platforms.
While the CEO did not confirm any exact platforms, a Steam release appears to be a safe bet. Recent releases from the company were also released as exclusives for Epic Games Store on PC.
However, games like Saints Row will make their way to Steam on August 24. Therefore, Embracer Group is expected to follow a similar release window for Dead Island 2 in hopes of additional sales.
A Nintendo Switch release is also possible, but the company may not be willing to spend the additional budget to optimize the game for handheld hardware.
Therefore, Steam appears to be the most likely platform for a Dead Island 2 release next year. Since the game was released in April, Steam users can expect the zombie slaying adventure to arrive on the platform in the same month next year.
