Perfect Dark is among the more anticipated games from Microsoft’s first-party line-up. The game was first revealed over two years ago, but not much has been said about it since then.
It was considered a reboot of the franchise, reimagining it for new hardware and a new generation of players. However, a developer’s Linkedin profile recently suggested this may not be the case.
Tyler Thornock has worked on several upcoming projects including Perfect Dark, and the developer described it as a reboot on his profile.
If true, this would be the opposite of what many have expected from the project since its initial reveal.
Recent job listings and rumors have also pointed to major shifts in gameplay for Perfect Dark. These changes include a major focus on third-person gameplay and traversal, which is a departure from the first-person gameplay seen in the franchise.
This could mean that The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics shifted their focus on the project at some point after the first reveal. While fans learned about Perfect Dark in 2020, the game is unlikely to come anytime soon.
It should also be noted that the terms reboot and remake can be used interchangeably in certain scenarios. The game may be borrowing elements heavily from its predecessor while changing other parts like the focus on third-person gameplay.
The recent wave of remakes like the Resident Evil games may have inspired Microsoft to shift focus on the project. However, Perfect Dark could take a unique approach, making significantly more changes than expected in traditional remakes.
Nonetheless, it is difficult to reach an accurate conclusion until more information is revealed about the project.
Microsoft’s next big gaming showcase is also just a few months away. The gaming giant will host the Xbox Games Showcase on June 11, and it is possible that fans might get their first glimpse of Perfect Dark gameplay at the event.
