Sony’s PlayStation 5 has seen incredible success throughout its limited lifespan. Demand for the console continues to be high, even two years after release, and the PlayStation 5 has recently crossed the 30 million sales mark.
On the other hand, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S consoles have also shown an impressive improvement over the last generation. The Xbox Series S, particularly, has proven to be extremely popular with budget gamers.
However, Ampere Analysis suggests that the UK audience prefers the PS5 as their primary console. The report shows 71% of UK PlayStation 5 owners use it as their primary console.
PlayStation has always seen a lot of success in the UK, and the report seems to reflect that.
The less popular Xbox Series X falls behind both recent PlayStation consoles and the Nintendo Switch, with only 48% of Xbox Series X owners using the console as their main gaming platform.
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass has recently seen tremendous success. A total of 42 games are already confirmed for Game Pass in 2023, and many new users have likely tried the new consoles for the subscription service, leading to the smaller percentage share in the report.
Despite Game Pass’ appeal, PlayStation owners are likely too involved in the eco-system to switch platforms entirely. After the last generation, millions of users picked the PS4 as their platform of choice and probably found it difficult to transition to a different platform fully.
Ampere Analysis believes that Sony’s exclusive strategy has contributed most significantly to the gaming giant’s success. Games like God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man have been top-rated, with the former selling over 5.1 million in the first week. Therefore, this is not too hard to believe.
Both console manufacturers are set to release a number of notable exclusive games in 2023. PlayStation has games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Final Final Fantasy 16, while Xbox is set to release big hitters like Starfield and Forza Motorsport.
As such, it is difficult to predict if PlayStation will continue to be the most appealing platform for the gaming industry, but Sony’s current strategy seems to be doing wonders for the company so far.
