Xbox To Rival PSSR With Its Own AI-Based Tech!

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft has already tested its own AI-based upscaling for games on the Snapdragon X Elite laptops released recently.
  • An insider believes this technology, known as Automatic Super Resolution, will be used in the Xbox handheld in the future.
  • This upscaler is easy to implement across various games, making it a natural fit for underpowered hardware found in portable systems.

Xbox’s next-generation plans are already in motion as the gaming giant sets its sights on success within the console realm again. One major difference between the current generation and the next will be Microsoft’s first foray into the handheld market.

Phil Spencer has already confirmed that portable Xbox hardware is being worked on, and new reports suggest Microsoft will make use of its in-house AI-based upscaler to make the most of its handheld.

Why it matters: AI-based upscaling has become standard across the industry due to Nvidia’s revolutionary DLSS.

According to notable industry insider Tom Warren, Microsoft’s existing Automatic Super Resolution will likely be used on the Xbox handheld.

Microsoft already has its own Automatic Super Resolution. I suspect we’ll see something similar on the Xbox side.

For context, this AI-based upscaler was previously used on the co-pilot range of laptops based on the Snapdragon X Elite and has already been tested across various games. The major difference between Automatic Super Resolution and DLSS or FSR is the fact that Microsoft’s implementation is easy to use with practically any game.

This makes it inherently suitable for use in gaming hardware like a handheld, where upscaling is necessary to balance performance and visuals. The above video highlights Digital Foundry’s testing with the technology, which showed encouraging initial results.

Unlike DLSS, FSR, or even PSSR, Microsoft’s AI model is still very new and will likely continue to improve until the handheld is ready. The most interesting element here is that all next-generation systems will rely on AI upscaling of some kind.

DLSS Will Be A Key Selling Point of The Nintendo Switch 2

PlayStation has already introduced PSSR with the PS5 Pro to impressive first results, and Nintendo is expected to fall back on Nvidia’s DLSS with the Switch 2. As such, Xbox seems to be bringing its own offering to the table, making it likely that the next home console will also use Automatic Super Resolution like the handheld.
