Microsoft's AI Push Is Getting Out of Hand!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox’s latest round of layoffs led to around 200 job cuts at one major studio.
  • AI is said to be responsible for many of these layoffs, with level designers and writers who trained the AI now being replaced by the same technology.
  • Such instances might become even more common as AI technology continues to improve.

Microsoft’s latest layoffs have led to thousands of job cuts, and artificial intelligence has been blamed for many of the job cuts.

A new report outlines how one particular Xbox studio has suffered at the hands of AI. According to sources, Xbox developer King is set to lose around 200 developers due to artificial intelligence.

Why it matters: AI was long considered a threat to jobs across various industries, and such examples show why many were concerned about the mainstream use of this technology.

King Is A Major Source of Revenue For Xbox

As reported by Mobile Gamer, King, the studio behind Candy Crush, is set to let go of hundreds of developers following the latest Microsoft job cuts.

It is said that AI tools are responsible for the job cuts, but this is not the most shocking part about the report. Mobile Gamer says that these tools were built by the same developers who are now being laid off.

According to the report, level designers, narrative writers, and researchers who spent years training the AI tools have been hit hard by the layoffs. The initial plan was to use AI to help the level designers craft levels quicker, but it seems the plans have now backfired.

Moreover, the copywriting team is being replaced completely. It is said that morale at the studio is at an all-time low due to the layoffs, creating dissatisfaction and tension within the King team.

Unfortunately, such instances might continue to become more popular moving forward.

Microsoft, among other companies, has invested billions of dollars into AI research. The gaming giant has already embraced an AI-focused future, so employees might have to plan ahead to ensure they don’t end up facing the same fate as King’s developers.
