A couple of months ago, the gaming industry was filled with the buzz of a dedicated Xbox handheld console coming our way. However, that couldn’t become a reality; instead, we got a pretty good alternative in the form of the ROG Xbox Ally X.
Now, Time Magazine has hailed the Xbox Ally X as one of the best inventions of 2025. It denotes as gaming has become more portable, the handheld makes more sense than ever and delivers a great experience.
Why it matters: While it isn’t technically a first-party Xbox product, it comes as a part of a partnership with Asus, and despite a steep price delivers great value with impressive performance.
The Xbox Ally X made Time Magazine’s list, along with some other things that came out in 2025. Its place is also justified considering it’s one of the most powerful handhelds you can currently buy, albeit at the $1000 price.
But that isn’t bothering the consumers either, as the top variant of the handheld’s pre-orders are already sold out, and the other variants are also doing well. There is the basic ROG Ally X, but the Xbox one has a few advantages.
Xbox Ally X receives the new upgraded AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip with a high power draw, and the performance gain is quite apparent. The handheld faired really well with Doom: The Dark Ages, getting over 70 FPS at 1080p with ray tracing.
So, yes, the price is quite high, but the Xbox Ally X is a great device and does justify its place amongst the best inventions of the year. However, the market is getting really interesting with rumors of a PS6 handheld coming soon.
