- LG has revealed the world’s first 5K OLED with a 45″ 800R Curved panel that has 125 PPI and with visuals up to 1300 nits at peak brightness.
- Its dual mode allows for switching within seconds from 5K 165Hz to 2K 330Hz, which is best suited for competitive gaming.
- Despite its features, it takes some time to get accustomed to its large size and curvature. It does come with a hefty price tag of $1,999.
The display technology is evolving at such a high speed that it is pretty challenging to keep up with all the trends. With refresh rates and resolutions increasing over time, the absolute peak is OLED.
If you’ve ever tried OLED, you know that there’s no going back once you’ve used it. Most OLEDS come with 4K resolution, but what if I told you there’s something even greater that has entered the market?
Say Hello To 5K OLED
LG has unveiled the world’s first ever 5K OLED display with their LG GX9 monitor. As you lay your eyes on this panel, you can see the hyper-realistic colours, which are a delight for your eyes.
Sharpness & Colors
This is because it features 125 pixels per inch, where each pixel is self-lit. Pair this with its 5K sharpness, which makes everything look almost crispy, as its visuals could reach up to 1300 nits at peak brightness.
With its HDR True Black 400, the blacks will be extremely dark, and the bright spots will have extremely sharp and vivid colours. With the specifications it comes with, you should know that it is more than what your eyes need.
45″ Wide Screen
It doesn’t just stop at its resolution and colours, because LG went ahead to extend its size to 45 inches. This means it comes with all the benefits that a wide-screen monitor comes with compared to a standard monitor.
This means you can edit your videos or play games on the 21:9 aspect ratio, and LG even claims that this 45″ wide aspect offers 40% more pixels than a 49″ monitor with a 32:9 DQHD screen.
While we’re not sure how valid this claim is, we know that 5K on a 45″ is highly pleasing to the eyes. Much like most gaming monitors, it also features anti-glare and low blue light, allowing you to use it in almost any lighting condition.
Curved Display
Okay, so it’s 5K OLED, 45 inches, and it’s curved. LG is stacking features upon features with this monitor. Now, you get to immerse yourself with this 800R curved display, and 5K looks incredible with this immersive screen.
The wide display gives you a somewhat unfair advantage while gaming since you get a higher field of view than other players. With this large of a display, I’m hesitant even to call it a monitor, as most TVs come in this size.
However, it is worth keeping in mind that you need to place it at a considerable distance from yourself, as the display may feel too close if you don’t maintain a proper distance from it.
Dual Mode: 165Hz & 330Hz
This is where it gets interesting. This monitor comes with two modes, depending on how you want to use it. In the first model, you can view the street at 5K resolution with up to 165Hz refresh rate.
This is perfect for productivity tasks, where you can utilize the higher resolution and still get crisp visuals, whether you’re video editing or making a 3D model on this enormous display.
The second mode switches to 2K with 330Hz in around 3 seconds. This is ideal for gamers who require higher refresh rates, particularly when playing competitive multiplayer games.
Other Features
Like most other gaming monitors, this OLED display comes with features like AMD FreeSync and Nvidia’s G-Sync to eliminate screen tearing and stutters. It also comes with an extremely quick 0.03ms response time.
It supports HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, and USB Type-C, so you can plug it in however you wish. It also has built-in speakers and support for a headphone jack. The screen is also borderless, making it incredibly immersive.
Its Price…
With all of these features, this monitor doesn’t come cheap. It comes with a hefty price tag of $1,999 (US dollars). However, people who have the budget for it and prefer its features should consider going for it.
Challenges With This Monitor
It is essential to note that with the wider display, certain aspects of the games may be harder to reach with your eyes, so you will need to move your head slightly, which could make gameplay more challenging.
For some gamers, this monitor might be very impractical, especially considering that they need refresh rates on a relatively smaller monitor. For instance, many competitive esports players prefer a 24-inch 1440p monitor.
Why Your Old Monitor Isn’t Cutting It Anymore
If you’re still using a 24-inch 1080p monitor with an IPS panel, consider upgrading it as soon as possible. I’m not telling you to upgrade directly to a 5K OLED display, but consider upgrading to a 27-inch 1440p one for a change.
