Will The Elden Ring DLC Live Up To The Hype?

Expert Verified By

Elden Ring has become a massive hit in From Software's lineup of games and gamers are stoked for the upcoming DLC set to release this summer. Will it live up to our hefty expectations? Read along to find out!

Story Highlights
  • The Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erd Tree, is anticipated to be From Software’s most ambitious expansion yet, as indicated by its price, interviews, and previous track record.
  • The explorable area of the DLC will be as large as Limgrave, with significant new characters like Queen Marika and Messmer.
  • Players can expect new weapons, including eight rumoured types, and a continuation of From Software’s signature challenging gameplay, potentially balanced by a new attribute to level up.

After praying to Miyazaki for ages, we have received our first look at the Elden Ring DLC with the gameplay trailer. This has led to speculation about what the Shadow Of The Erd Tree DLC entails and whether it will live up to its enormous hype.

What To Expect

Judging by its price, From Software’s interviews, and their track record, it’s clear that the Elden Ring DLC will likely stand as the company’s most ambitious expansion to date. In the forthcoming sections, we’ll delve into the intricacies of the Shadow Of The Erd Tree DLC and explore the expectations it holds.

Location And Map Size

According to Miyazaki, The Shadow Of The Erd Tree DLC is set to occupy the same world as the Land Between and is not set in the past or future. How is this possible? Well, the foremost theory is pretty simple: a magical presence in the DLC casts a veil over the world we’ve grown accustomed to in place of the DLC locations.

The DLC trailer shows many new landmarks and locations, including a second Erd Tree (most likely the Haligtree), open fields, Legacy dungeons, and even an area filled with lava.

As for the size, Miyazaki has a direct quote stating that it will be similar, if not larger, to Limgrave. The download size of the DLC and the asking price for Elden Ring owners match these statements.

Important Characters

Potentially Messmer

There are two salient characters associated with the DLC at this point; one is Queen Marika, whose past we will be exploring according to Miyazaki, and Messmer, a new heroic character original to the DLC.

The setting of the Shadow Of The Erd Tree DLC confirms this claim, as Markia is said to come from the Land of Shadows. Naturally, we could also be getting some insight into Miquella and Malenia, though the extent of their exploration is uncertain.

Messmer seems to be occupying a similar role to Malenia, being a guard of sorts for Miquella. We hope that we get a chance to fight him as a boss, similar to Malenia’s scale.

Main And Side Bosses

The trailer gave us stunning visuals of boss fights, such as the Lion Dancer, the Wicker Man (probably a side boss), the Twin Blade Knight, akin to the Dancer Of The Boreal Valley, and the Red Dancer, who is speculated to be an NPC fight.

Miquella should also be making an appearance as the main or final boss of the DLC, though we are short on details regarding this interaction. We think this is the best way to keep the wow factor that you get by seeing a From Boss for the first time.

Weapons

Twin Curve Swords

From Software have been no strangers to crafting intricate weapons for the past few games in their lineup, and they will do it again for this DLC.

Eight new weapon types are rumored to be in the Shadow Of The Erd Tree, including the six we can see in the trailer: dueling shields, large katanas, martial arts, throwing swords, repeating crossbows, and reverse swords.

We might be seeing a new sorcery type as well as a myriad of new spells with this update.

Will It Be Worth The Hype?

From Software have always made brilliant DLC for their Souls IPs. Even Dark Souls 2, which is commonly known as the worst Souls game, had a pretty fun DLC.

From’s track history and the news that we have on the Shadow Of The Erd Tree DLC promise an enjoyable experience for seasoned players, and we can not wait to see what the team has in store for us!
