For all of Nintendo’s innovation in game design and console design, its hardware and online services have always lagged behind that of its competitors. From clunky friend codes to voice chat complications and limited online features, even fans agree that Nintendo’s online infrastructure is frustratingly outdated. With the Switch 2 finally revealed many are wondering: will Nintendo do it right this time?

A History of Missed Opportunities

Nintendo’s approach to online gaming has always been unconventional. The original Switch launched with no party chat system, limited multiplayer capabilities and an online experience that felt more like a work around than a feature. Voice chat required a separate mobile app, friend matchmaking was awkward, and cloud saving was inconsistent across titles.

In contrast, other platforms offered an integrated voice chat, seamless friend systems with better matchmaking, and a better online experience. Even PC gamers enjoyed better multiplayer integration through online modes. It’s no wonder that Nintendo users have been begging for an upgrade. 

The Expectations for Switch 2

With the Switch 2 releasing soon in 2025 the expectations for online improvements are at an all-time high. Fans are not demanding perfection; all they want are the modern basics. Players want built-in voice chat, better matchmaking and friend systems, stable servers with improved latency, and a unified online infrastructure across games.

There are some hopes that Nintendo will adopt a better design and more modern connectivity options. These will include features such as Bluetooth for voice-chat headsets, and support for apps like Discord or at least native party apps and messaging. 

Clues That Nintendo Is Listening

There have been signs that Nintendo is preparing for a stronger online showing.  The expansion of Nintendo Switch Online with retro game libraries, DLS access, and cloud saves was a step in the right direction. 

Apart from this, recent job listings have suggested that Nintendo is investing in network infrastructure and back-end engineering talent. This is the indication for a potential shift. Also, the recent rumors have suggested that the Switch 2 will have a new docking system limited to 4k at 30 FPS. 

Also, the device may come with better online play and will feature faster load times, improved networking chips, and maybe even a streamlined OS experience.

What They Need to Do to Compete

If Nintendo truly wants to compete with others in the market, it has to think past playing catch-up. The online experience is no longer an option; it is vital for people to connect and build communities. Titles such as Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 3, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate have thriving multiplayer scenes but limited online features and poor net code often hold them back.

Considering a launch price of $399 we should expect some improvement over the original console. Additionally, a better online experience can open the world for Nintendo to new game genres. Imagine persistent online worlds, co-op RPGs, live game services, and better cross-platform multiplayer titles.

All of this can be achieved by Nintendo easily if it decides to make a few adjustments. The new console does not need to be special all it has to do is retain Nintendo’s charm and improve its online structure to rise up to competition.

Final Thoughts: Now or Never?

Nintendo now has the chance to close the gap and meet the expectations of a connected generation of gamers through Switch 2. With their track record of learning from missteps and issues such as those seen in the Wii 2 shows that there is hope Nintendo will take the online services more seriously this time. 

If they succeed in doing so, Nintendo Switch 2 can be more than just a hardware upgrade. Considering that the console already has an estimated prediction of 17 million units in 2025, this number could be increased significantly by improving the online services.
