Why I No Longer Use The Internet Without A VPN

Expert Verified By

Why deal with regional restrictions, security threats, and censorship on the internet when VPNs exist? A solid VPN can completely bypass these problems and do so much more that I can't even imagine using the internet without one.

Story Highlight
  • VPNs serve as great safety nets when playing games with potential attacks online.
  • They unlock regional content on streaming services.
  • VPNs are also important in bypassing the censorship and facial recognition restrictions being imposed in various parts of the world today.

VPNs have come a long way today, and many options exist in the market for those looking to mask their online identities. Because the landscape of the internet has also evolved so rapidly, it has become susceptible to attacks, censorship, and all types of other restrictions.

However, these challenges can be completely bypassed with the help of a solid VPN. In my opinion, there is no scenario where using the internet is better without a VPN today, and this is largely why I believe I can no longer survive without one.

Why it matters: Access to a high-quality VPN is easier than ever today, and there is really no excuse not to use one.

Using A VPN While Gaming

Titanfall Released 9 Years Ago
Titanfall Was Hit By DDOS Attacks Not Too Long Ago

As someone who plays a lot of games, I often revisit older classics. Although older games with online components aren’t the most safe in today’s age, I can’t help but play a session or two when I revisit classics like Titanfall or Call of Duty.

Both franchises have had their fair share of problems, with the former suffering from DDOS attacks not too long ago. In Call of Duty’s attacks, the threats are much more severe, but a VPN can still serve as an extra layer of protection in these cases.

Access to free VPN can almost certainly negate the threat of an exploit like a DDOS attack, so I tend to rely on this service as a safety net whenever revisiting games with potential threats lurking around the corner.

VPNs can even get around bandwidth throttling from ISPs. Bandwidth throttling can ruin a perfectly fine online gameplay session, but with VPN access 24/7, I rarely ever think about my bandwidth when playing games online.

Bypassing Regional Restrictions

A VPN Can Unlock The Full Potential of Streaming Services

Beyond gaming, VPNs unlock a new world for general internet usage. One of my most common use cases for VPNs is linked directly to streaming content on Netflix.

Lately, I’ve found myself watching sitcoms like The Office, Friends, and Brooklyn 99, but as luck would have it, no one region has all of these shows on Netflix. Fortunately, my VPN grants me access to Netflix in the UK or the US at will.

This also means that I can watch anime that might be region-locked on Netflix or Crunchyroll at a moment’s notice. While this is already enough reason to use a VPN, this technology will become even more important moving forward.

Recently, the UK has begun imposing age restrictions on various types of websites and content. The pros and cons of this move are debatable, but the hassle and privacy concerns of going through facial recognition to simply access common websites like Twitter and Spotify are undeniable.

I don’t think anybody wants to go through these measures to access websites that have been widely usable for decades at this point. Fortunately, access to a VPN means that restrictions for basic websites like Twitter or Spotify can be avoided.

The same might be true of games soon since recent chatter suggests games like GTA 5 could impose facial recognition for certain components in the UK soon. Censorship throughout the internet will only become more common in the next year or two, so access to a quality VPN will become all the more important.

Other Benefits

Free VPNs Are Very Reliable Today

Beyond gaming and regional restrictions, VPNs offer plenty of other benefits. Whether it be IP masking and protection on unsecured public networks, a VPN can do a lot more for the average person than one may realize.

This is why relying on one is basically mandatory in the modern age, and it’s a good thing that free options today are vastly superior to the one’s available just a few years ago.
