Crystal Dynamics And Virtuous Shanghai Led Development!

Story Highlight
  • A remake of Tomb Raider Anniversary was once in development by Crystal Dynamics and Virtuos Shanghai.
  • Renders from the scrapped project have now been leaked.
  • The remake was canceled due to engine complications or other reasons.

The Tomb Raider series is one of the most well-known IPs in the gaming industry. Dating back to 1996, the series has undergone various iterations, but the original rendition of Lara Croft remains the best.

The original Tomb Raider had already received a remake, titled Tomb Raider Anniversary, in 2007. However, being over a decade old, that title was outdated too in terms of visuals.

The latest report confirms that a remake of Tomb Raider Anniversary was once in development, alongside renders of assets that originated from a playable build.

Why it matters: Being one of the most iconic action-adventure games, it’s disappointing to see that a Tomb Raider remake was scrapped. It would’ve introduced a whole new generation to the original iteration of Lara Croft.

Renders featuring Lara Croft in her iconic Tomb Raider costume, alongside a few enemies and level design, were recently leaked on Archive.org. The assets leaked were from the first playable build for the game being developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Virtuos Shanghai.

The renders were from an early development stage that would’ve received a more modern touch in terms of quality later.

According to the leak, the initial plan was for a simple port of the original Tomb Raider game for Xbox One and other modern platforms. However, a later decision involved merging Tomb Raider Anniversary and The Rise Of The Tomb Raider engine to create a more modern-day experience.

The final result would be more than just a remaster, but not exactly a complete remake. However, the project was later scrapped due to possible complications merging the engine or other reasons.

Currently, Virtous is reportedly working on an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake while Crystal Dynamics is fully engaged in another reboot of Tomb Raider
