- CDPR is looking at successful RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and KCD2 while working on The Witcher 4.
- The team intends to implement elements such as character building and world reactivity from these titles.
- CDPR will also remain true to its own style of RPGs while drawing inspiration from these games.
The Witcher 4 has become the talk of the town once again following an impressive tech demo from CDPR. With the RPG looking better than ever, the studio has also expressed confidence in its work, promising to set a new bar for the genre.
Quite fittingly, then, the team is looking at RPG mammoths as it continues to develop The Witcher 4. As per CDPR, both Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 serve as major inspirations for its next big RPG.
Why it matters: Although much of CDPR’s next big RPG remains a mystery, this small detail should give fans a hint of what to expect in terms of the RPG systems featured in The Witcher 4.
Speaking to PCGamer, CDPR joint CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that everyone is looking back on successful titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
In the former’s case, he pointed to the character and world-building elements as a major source of inspiration for The Witcher 4. Previously, the studio described how every NPC would react differently to Ciri in The Witcher 4.
As part of the same focus, the team intends to present these elements with its own style layered on top. Similarly, co-CEO Adam Badowski praised Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 for its reactive open world and simulation.
He stated that CDPR hopes to present a similar experience in The Witcher 4, prioritizing freedom of choice throughout the experience.
I love Kingdom Come because of the realism.
-Adam Badowski
Although CDPR has plenty of material to look back upon within its own hits, the team is looking at the RPG genre as a whole for The Witcher 4.
The studio previously clarified that it won’t be treading familiar ground with this entry, so fans should expect more than a few differences between the series’ last and upcoming entry.
On that note, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 are perhaps the best games to look at. Both titles have received excellent critical and commercial reception, making them the two most popular Western RPGs of the last few years.
What do you think about CDPR’s praise for the games? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
