Star Wars Outlaws Drops As Low As 720p For 60FPS On PS5 and Series X

Series S Limited To Just 30FPS!

Story Highlight
  • Star Wars Outlaws fails to hold a steady 60FPS in its performance mode.
  • This mode also runs at a dynamic resolution, with the target falling as low as 720p.
  • The quality mode runs much better, though it can drop as low as 1134p.

Star Wars Outlaws is right around the corner, and recent coverage has revealed a lot about the game. Following the reviews and testing of the PC version, Ubisoft has also launched the title in early access.

On PC, the game can take up as much as 21GB of VRAM. Elsewhere, console testing reveals that significant cuts to resolution are required for the 60FPS target in performance mode.

According to a report, the game drops to 720p when running at 60FPS on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Why it matters: The latest consoles promised 4K gaming, so it’s quite disappointing to see such massive resolution cuts for current-gen-only titles so early on in the current generation’s lifespan.

Star Wars Outlaws is made with the Snowdrop engine, and Digital Foundry has praised many aspects of the title.

Massive Entertainment seems to have done a solid job with the lighting, interiors, and many other parts of the game. However, these positives don’t come without their caveats.

According to the analysts, the 60FPS mode on both consoles is inconsistent. Drops below 60FPS are frequent, even with the render resolution range falling between 720p and 1080p.

Looking at the resolutions of the other graphics modes, the 40FPS mode seems to strike the best balance between performance and image quality. It runs between 936p and 1252p and maintains the target frame rate much better.

Elsewhere, the 30FPS mode ranges from 1134p to 1620p. Interestingly, Massive Entertainment skips most of these options for the Xbox Series S, offering a fixed 30FPS experience.

Star Wars Outlaws VRAM Consumption At 4K Resolution On PC

It is also important to note that performance mode involves big trade-offs, such as limited foliage density, worse draw distances, and lower-quality reflections.

Because the PS5 is limited to such a low resolution when running the game at 60FPS, it will be interesting to see how the PS5 Pro eventually handles the game. Hopefully, the developers will go back and offer updates to utilize the additional hardware capabilities of Sony’s upgraded console.
