- Sony reveals PS5 generation alone has produced $13 billion in operating profits.
- This is more than all the past Sony console generations, which cumulatively generated $10 billion in profit.
- The PS5 generation has also already become the largest in terms of total sales, resulting in a whopping $136 billion figure.
The start of the current generation was quite messy for Sony due to the pandemic, with the PS5 experiencing a slower-than-expected launch. However, not only did the console bounce back, but the PS5 era also appears to have achieved a milestone that no one saw coming.
Sony has announced that the PS5 era has now generated over $13 billion in operating profits over the past five years. This figure is so high that it eclipses all past console generations—from the PS1 to the PS4—significantly, which have only generated $10 billion.
Why it matters: Sony’s success in sales and profits during the PS5 era proves that the traditional console model still thrives when done right.
In its new business segment meeting presentation, Sony also shows that the PS5 era was the most profitable in terms of sales. It accumulated over $136 billion in sales, which is noticeably higher than the $107 figure made in the last generation.
The generation with the PlayStation 5 has already become the largest in terms of the total sales and operating income.

The meeting also revealed that more users are now using the PS5 over the PS4 each month, a figure that was previously equally split between the two platforms last year.
Additionally, over 30% of PS Plus subscribers are paying for the Premium or Extra tier, which is up from 30% two years ago. This is despite controversies surrounding past and future price increases for the service.
PlayStation will also continue to focus on a pretty conservative multi-platform approach to ensure a good balance between player satisfaction and profits.
