Another Major Win For PlayStation?

Story Highlight
  • Sony could benefit more from Black Ops 6 despite Xbox owning the IP.
  • Game Pass growth has been stagnant, and Xbox has invested massively in the acquisition.
  • A substantial increase in Game Pass subscribers due to Black Ops 6 could turn the equation around.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was a huge moment in the gaming industry. The $69 billion buyout saw Xbox become the owner of massive IPs like Call of Duty. Finally, with Black Ops 6, the franchise is officially releasing day 1 on Game Pass.

However, analysts predict that despite spending so much money on the acquisition, Sony might be the ultimate benefactor of Black Ops 6 and not Xbox.

Why it matters: Despite receiving 70% of the revenue from Call of Duty sales compared to PlayStation’s 30%, Xbox has to consider many things. This could lead to Sony eventually earning a higher profit.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Black Ops 6 could benefit PlayStation more than Xbox

According to an analyst at Gamesindustry.biz, PlayStation could end up making more money from Call of Duty despite Xbox owning the IP. The major reason for that is the investments Xbox has put in.

PlayStation would only get the profit, while Xbox had to pay an enormous amount for Activision Blizzard, then they have to keep it on the Game Pass, leading to most profit being canceled out by the bigger investments they have done.

Game Pass has been stagnant in growth for a very long time time. By putting Call of Duty on the service, Xbox is hoping it can once again expand it. However, the move could trigger really badly if, there is still no increase.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
PlayStation has much higher Call of Duty sales

PlayStation has a wider audience for Call of Duty, and because they don’t need to invest much, they will be making huge revenue out of it. However, as you don’t have to pay the $70 price tag if you have a Game Pass subscription, more people could shift towards it.

If the equation remains the same, PlayStation would be the ultimate benefactor. Who do you think would benefit more from this situation, Xbox or PlayStation? Let us know in the comments or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forum.
