A New Massive Acquisition Could Be On The Horizon!

Story Highlight
  • Sony is allegedly in talks to acquire FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa.
  • The massive merger could have drastic effects on the gaming industry, and regulators might step in to stop the deal.
  • Sony declined to comment on the matter, while Kadokawa argued that it also could not comment on these claims.

We’re all familiar with the gargantuan Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard saga that took place last year. It was the biggest merger in the history of the gaming industry, and many regulating parties stepped in to stop it from closing. However, the buyout was successful after many developments. Now, it appears that Sony is about to acquire one of the biggest firms in a massive new, unexpected acquisition.

A new report suggests that the giant gaming conglomerate is currently in talks to buy Elden Ring studio’s parent company, Kadokawa.

Why it matters: Sony’s attempt to acquire FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa, could have huge consequences for the gaming industry. Additionally, regulators might step in to stop the deal from happening in the first place.

Kadokawa boasts massive gaming franchises under its portfolio.

As reported by Reuters, the discussions of the acquisition between Sony and Kadokawa are currently underway, and if successful, then a deal might be finalized in just a few weeks.

It would mean that all the popular gaming franchises under the Kadokawa umbrella, such as Elden Ring, Armored Core, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and more, could come under Sony—something akin to Microsoft’s control over Activision Blizzard nowadays.

The reaction of the gaming industry has been mixed over Twitter and various other forums, with many players showing their concerns and displeasure at the new potential acquisition.

It is worth noting that Sony declined to comment entirely when Reuters approached with the matter. On the flip side, Kadokawa clarified that it could also not pass any remarks on the matter.
