Marathon Still On Track For A 2026 Release Despite The Losses!

Story Highlight
  • Sony says it’s unhappy with Destiny 2’s performance and has lowered sales targets.
  • The low sales and engagement have led to an impairment loss of over $204 million.
  • Despite this, the partnership remains safe as Bungie prepares to launch Marathon.

Sony’s Bungie acquisition is one of the most talked-about things in the gaming industry, and all for the wrong reasons. Since it happened in 2022, things haven’t really worked out for either of them as a team, and things are getting worse.

Destiny 2, once a massive driver of sales and players, has now shown a lot of deterioration in recent years. Sony says it is disappointed with the game’s sales and engagement numbers and has recorded an impairment loss.

Why it matters: Destiny 2 recently hit its lowest player count ever, and fans also complained that they don’t trust Bungie anymore, highlighting the current state of the once-loved title.

Sony CFO Lin Tao, via Q&A from the recent Financial Report, stated that Destiny 2 is underperforming expectations, engagement is at its lowest, and the company is facing an impairment loss of over $204 million on a portion of assets.

The abysmal performance even led Sony to downwardly revise Bungie‘s targets. The impairment loss was the main reason why PlayStation’s gaming segment and services saw a drop in operating profit in Q2 2025.

However, Tao continued that the partnership still remains strong and they will continue to support Bungie. The studio is currently working on Marathon, which, despite some internal doubts, is still slated for a 2026 release

It means that Sony still believes that Bungie can bounce back. Destiny 2 is also set to get its next major update, which is Star Wars themed, and that will definitely give the player base a slight push once again.
