RTX 5070 Dubbed Worst 70 Series From Nvidia; Only 1% Faster Than 4070 Super At 1440p

RTX 5070 Is Faster Than RTX 4090? Wrong! RTX 4090 Is 63% Faster At 1440p!

Story Highlight
  • The RTX 5070 is, on average, just 1% faster than the RTX 4070 Super at 1440p.
  • It frequently runs out of VRAM when utilizing heavy ray tracing effects.
  • The GPU is also significantly slower than the RTX 4090 despite Nvidia’s marketing stating otherwise.

The RTX 5070 was pitched as the most exciting Blackwell gaming product since it was seemingly on track to strike the perfect balance between price and performance. However, ahead of this release, stock shortages and the rest of the RTX 50 series’ problems created concerns about the RTX 5070.

It seems these concerns were not misplaced, as the latest RTX 5070 reviews are anything but encouraging. As per these reviews, the graphics card is practically a rebranded RTX 4070 Super.

Why it matters: These reviews paint a grim picture for the RTX 5070. The graphics card is now likely to be completely outclassed by the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT once they arrive.

As per Hardware Unboxed’s benchmarks, the RTX 5070 has failed to deliver a substantial leap. In fact, the reviewer has dubbed this GPU Nvidia’s worst 70-series launch to date.

The benchmarks show a 15-20% typical difference between the RTX 4070 and RTX 5070, but the results look much worse when using the RTX 4070 Super as a reference point.

Perhaps the worst part is that Hardware Unboxed found the RTX 5070 to be slower than the RTX 4070 Super in certain games like Stalker 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p. Other games, which favored the higher bandwidth of the new GPU, however, saw the RTX 5070 leading by a somewhat impressive margin.

One such example was Hogwarts Legacy, where the RTX 5070 led by 21% when compared to the RTX 4070 Super at 1440p. Unfortunately, this was one of the rarer instances, and the average lead saw the RTX 5070 pulling ahead of the RTX 4070 Super by an abysmal 1% at 1440p.

Moreover, this means that it falls far behind the RTX 4090’s performance by a significant margin. The RTX 5070 is also quick to run out of VRAM in games that utilize intensive ray tracing, showcasing yet another weakness of the GPU.

While the $549 MSRP appears to be a saving grace in this scenario, the graphics card is expected to sell for much higher prices due to limited stock at release.

Because the RX 9070 XT is expected to perform so much better, Nvidia might opt for yet another Super refresh for its Blackwell lineup. The gaming giant could also move forward with price drops, but future events will depend on the market’s preference.

If gamers continue to ignore AMD’s offerings in favor of Nvidia’s, Team Green will have no reason to lower prices or offer better options. For context, the RTX 4060 is currently Steam’s most popular GPU, and it received similarly negative reviews during its launch period.
