Following RDR 1, Rockstar Needs To Port Red Dead Revolver Next

Expert Verified By

RDR 1's PC release is certainly a cause for celebration, but its predecessor, the highly overlooked Red Dead Revolver is still dead, which more than deserves to be the candidate for the next revival.

Story Highlight
  • After years of waiting, Red Dead Redemption is finally coming to PC.
  • It’s time to complete the series by reviving the first one, Red Dead Revolver, as well.
  • Red Dead Revolver may not be open-world, but it’s a highly underrated third-person shooter with impressive gameplay mechanics.

With gaming making steady progress, the need to preserve past titles and classics has become greater than ever. It’s important to never forget the gems that made it possible for today’s games to reach such heights. Plus, they serve as a reminder of what gaming embodied back then: an evergrowing pursuit of greatness.

This point becomes even more critical when we consider that this is an era of remakes and remasters. Unfortunately, many needless re-releases exist today, but sometimes, a genuinely worthy title does get to enjoy the spotlight once again. Rockstar has recently given its undeniable gem that chance.

Why it matters: Rockstar has finally released Red Dead Redemption on PC. However, the originator of the series, Red Dead Revolver, is still dead and deserves to be revived, too.

Red Dead Redemption Finally Has A PC Port

The gem I’m talking about is none other than Red Dead Redemption. I don’t even need to tell you just how beloved RDR 2 is for today’s gamers. However, regardless of their desire, the second entry was all they could play. That’s because Red Dead Redemption was stuck on the PS3 and Xbox 360 for over 13 years.

This changed last year when Rockstar decided to answer its fans’ calls and bring back Red Dead Redemption for the PS4 and Switch. Believe me, that was a wild day. Seeing it return after more than a decade was certainly celebration-worthy. However, PC players couldn’t reciprocate these feelings since they were ignored.

It was heartbreaking, considering most RDR 2 fans are on PCs now. However, now I understand that Rockstar didn’t overlook them; the PC port simply took longer, it seems.

FINALLY!!! Red Dead Redemption 1 for PC

Red Dead Redemption is finally arriving on PC at the end of October, with enhanced visuals and a $50 price tag. Though this price for a 2010 game is questionable, it’s not surprising considering it’s Rockstar (remember all the GTA 5 re-releases?). Getting to play RDR on PC is a dream of many enthusiastic gamers.

What About Red Dead Revolver?

If you think Red Dead Redemption is the first game in the series, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least. It gained the most traction and fame, completely overshadowing the fact that there was another, the one that started it all.

It began in 2000 when Capcom collaborated with Angel Studios for its new IP with a Western theme. However, Take-Two, the Rockstar parent, acquired Angel Studios, renamed it Rockstar San Diego, and changes at Capcom caused the game to be canceled. However, Rockstar saw potential in what was in the works.

Thus, it acquired the rights to Red Dead Revolver and finished the game in 2004. Though it was not as well-received, I genuinely believe it is a highly underrated title and among Rockstar’s finest works.

Instead of the open world you see in the two RDR games, Red Dead Revolver was level-based with a single explorable hub called Brimstone in between. It was primarily a third-person shooter with remarkable gameplay and shooting mechanics. The way you could have stand-offs with certain bosses and enemies was genuinely exciting.

Bring Back The Series’ Origins

All in all, it was a fantastic game criminally overlooked. I’ll be honest with you, and I’m sure this statement will paint a target on my back, but I’m not too much of a fan of the RDR duology’s gameplay. There are certain factors, like the approach to the open world and the shooting mechanics, that I wish were different.

Red Dead Revolver does those things better than its successors. Yes, the world design and engagement are nowhere near that, and the story is a lot more refined in the latter two, but Red Dead Revolver handled gameplay mechanics pretty well and still holds up effectively for a 2004 game.

Besides, if it wasn’t for Red Dead Revolver, the series you know and love wouldn’t exist. Considering how much people adore RDR today, they’ll be more than eager to give something that started it all a try, and Rockstar needs to capitalize on that popularity.

Red Dead Revolver might not have been a hit back then, but it can certainly be one today. Besides, it’s still stuck on the PS2 and Xbox (The PS4 version is not a true port). Since Rockstar has brought back Red Dead Redemption, it’s the perfect time to port Red Dead Revolver, too.
