An Original Rayman Remake Was Canceled in 2021, Former Ubisoft Employee Reveals

Rayman Was Ubisoft's First Flagship IP!

Story Highlight
  • A former Ubisoft employee revealed he was working on a Rayman remake before its cancellation in 2021.
  • The remake had two different titles: Rayman Forever and Story of Rayman.
  • The last mainline Rayman game was released in 2013, but a new game might be on the horizon.

Ubisoft faced its darkest years in the early 2020s, with the publisher canceling several million-dollar projects, laying off employees, and shutting down studios. There is a lot of good stuff at Ubisoft that could’ve been, and among them is the remake of the original Rayman game.

A remake of the first Rayman game, tentatively titled ‘Rayman: Forever’ and ‘The Story of Rayman,’ was under development at Ubisoft in 2021 before it was eventually scrapped.

Why it matters: It’s been quite a while since we last saw Rayman in a full-fledged release. A Rayman remake could certainly do well for Ubisoft in the publisher’s dark times, but alas.

Phong, a VFX artist who previously worked at Ubisoft, revealed that he was tasked with redesigning Rayman’s logo and home screen for a modern look. Under the aforementioned two titles, Phong curated a few logos for the game as seen above.

Unfortunately, the game was scrapped due to unknown reasons. An educated guess suggests that the project’s cancellation likely resulted from cost-cutting measures, given that 2021 wasn’t favorable for the once-renowned French publisher.

Still, it’s pretty unfortunate to see an IP like Rayman get this treatment. Newer audiences may not be familiar with Rayman, but it was the first flagship franchise by Ubisoft and is the reason why the publisher is so prominent today.

Rayman Legends was released in 2013, and fans have been eagerly awaiting a new entry since then. Fortunately, a new game is under discussion at Ubisoft, as confirmed by the publisher itself.

It would still take a few years to be released, and by now, we would have already had the Rayman remake if the project had not been canceled.
