PS5 Pro Ray Tracing In Alan Wake 2 Falls Short In Comparison To PC Low RT Settings

The Difference In Reflections And Shadows Is Massive!

Story Highlight
  • PS5 Pro was being compared with the RTX 4070 and RX 7800XT before release.
  • A detailed comparison video from Digital Foundry revealed major differences between the Pro console and the 4070.
  • The console’s ray tracing is quite a bit worse when compared with the low RT settings in Alan Wake 2 running on an RTX 4070.

The PS5 Pro, a mid-gen refresh, has faced much criticism lately. Before the official specs were out, many hyped the console by comparing it with the RTX 4070 and Radeon 7800XT. However, now that the console has been released, some detailed analyses have raised concerns.

Sony’s new hardware even lost to a 4-year-old GPU, the RX 6800, in games like Elden Ring. Moreover, in Alan Wake 2, the console fell short compared to a PC’s low RT settings.

Why it matters: The pro variant’s price has already been widely criticised, and these tests show that it might not be worth the upgrade.

A detailed video from Digital Foundry compared the PS5 Pro’s Quality mode with an RTX 4070 running the game at DLSS balanced with low RT. It showed the latter has an advantage when it comes to ray tracing as well as frame rates.

In the comparison images and videos, the PC has better ray tracing even with low RT settings. Digital Foundry has also revealed that in this game, the Pro console has no direct lighting feature when ray tracing is enabled.

The shadows also look better on the PC version due to the ray-traced direct lighting option. At 32:54, you can even note that the Pro console doesn’t have the trees reflected on the water at a distance.

For an even more detailed difference, you can check the comparison at 34:56, where the reflection on the PC with low RT settings is much better than that on the PS5 Pro in Alan Wake 2. Similarly, at 36:30, the floor lighting does not work well with the floor textures.

This could be an issue with just Alan Wake 2, and the PS5 Pro might be able to do better in other games, but it is still disappointing, as many claimed it to deliver the same experience as the RTX 4070, if not better.

What do you think of the ray tracing differences between the PS5 Pro and RTX 4070 in Alan Wake 2? Do you think the pro variant is worth buying? Let us know what you think in the comments section below, or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers forums
