While Others Stepping Away From DEI, PlayStation Increasing DEI Focus!

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation is hiring more employees for its inclusivity push, with the latest job ad being for a DE&I specialist.
  • The gaming giant wants to embed diversity and inclusivity into its first-party studios.
  • It will also continue to work with third parties amid this focus.

The subject of inclusivity and diversity is a controversial one in the gaming industry. With the likes of Sweet Baby becoming quite prevalent and major publishers going all-in on DE&I (diversity, equity, and inclusivity), many fans have spoken out against this focus.

The likes of Square Enix have even stepped away from this push recently, but it seems PlayStation is not following suit. As per a new job listing, the gaming giant is actually looking to increase its focus on DE&I.

Why it matters: A game like Concord was criticized for its character designs. The bland characters drew criticism from nearly everyone, with many believing that they ended up as bland due to Firewalk needlessly catering to everyone.

PlayStation Is Hiring A DE&I Specialist For Its First-Party Teams

According to a new job listing, PlayStation intends to facilitate additional diversity and inclusivity. This role is specifically for first-party teams, so fans should expect these elements to be more prevalent in games from internal studios moving forward.

It is also important to note that the new employee will report directly to the DE&I Manager at PlayStation Studios. Looking at the responsibilities, it’s clear that the gaming giant wants inclusivity to become a core part of the company.

Embed DE&I in talent processes for PSS (PlayStation Studios).

The new employee will also be responsible for partnering with global DE&I and social justice teams as part of these efforts. This may lead to closer relationships between PlayStation and companies like Sweet Baby Inc.

The Gaming Giant’s First-Party Teams Already Work Closely With Sweet Baby Inc.

What’s interesting is that PlayStation’s games already have plenty of inclusivity. The likes of God of War Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2, and more were released after consultation with Sweet Baby Inc.

Going by the job listing, these instances will only become more common for the gaming giant.

With the biggest forces in the industry investing heavily in DE&I, other gaming companies might have no choice but to follow suit.

A studio like Game Science has already been criticized for a supposed lack of diversity in Black Myth: Wukong, setting a dangerous precedent for those who choose to go against the norm. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see how this focus shapes the industry moving forward.
